He grew up in Hull, where he attended the Hull Christian School and Western Christian High School. After graduation, he went on to earn his degree in electrical Engineering from the Northwest Iowa Technical College in Sheldon. He used those gifts and talents when he joined his dad and brothers at Art’s Electric in Hull as a part-owner and Master Electrician.

Betty Smit, 92, Orange City
He was a lifelong member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church, and having Jesus at the center of his life, and his family’s life, brought them strength for each day and hope for each tomorrow. On Nov. 4, 1994, Loren married the love of his life, Michelle Lynn “Shelly” Krommendyk. Together they built their home in Hull and were blessed with three children, Lindsey in 2000, Allison in 2002, and Nathan in 2005. Loren enjoyed doing thoughtful and creative projects around their home, including remodeling the house, and bringing more character to their backyard. What mattered most to him was being able to do those projects, and enjoy the end result, with his family.
In 1949, she was hired by the local bank and served for six years as a teller and then a cashier. Monday, Dec. 12, at the church, followed by interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Even though this new teacher lived in an apartment across the alley from her family, it wasn’t until a church supper that she had the opportunity to first visit with Glen Hegstad. Soon, Ardie and Glen were dating and married on July 24, 1955, at Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland.
Loren Van Otterloo, 51, Hull
Ardie had the opportunity of advancing her career at the bank but turned it down to take care of their growing family. Spending time with his family was important to Ken, and he regularly attended his grandchildren’s various activities. He enjoyed reading, working on handyman projects, and restoring old tractors, which he drove in the annual Orange City Tulip Festival parades.
Family meant the world to Loren, and spending time with them was always his top priority. Watching his children develop and use their own gifts and talents brought him great joy. Glen’s teaching career took them to Hillsboro, North Dakota, and then to Orange City, Iowa. Ardie was a tremendous support to Glen throughout his teaching career, typing many tests for him along with the early versions of Glen’s dissertation for his PhD. In retirement, she typed hundreds of pages of Glen’s family history books.
They visited Norway and met relatives from both sides of the family. For several winters, they enjoyed bus trips to the south, in addition to a number of winters at Lake Havasu, Arizona, and one in Southern California. Glen passed away on April 9, 2019, in Orange City, after more than 63 years of marriage. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Gary Hegstad and the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. She was also a 20-year member of Sweet Adelines International, an organization of women singers. Loren Dale Van Otterloo was born on Nov. 14, 1971, in Sioux Center, the son of Arthur and Margaret Van Otterloo.

She was united in marriage to Arnold John Smit on Nov. 22, 1949. They made their home and raised their family in Hull, where in addition to being a wife and mother, Betty helped Arnold with his trucking business. In 1990, the couple retired and moved to Sioux Center, where they lived for five years before moving to Orange City.
